Two different metal conductors are welded together to form a closed loop. If a temperature difference is generated by heating the welding end, a thermoelectromotive force will be generated in the loop. This phenomenon is called the Seebeck effect. If the temperature at the other end (as the reference end) remains constant (usually 0°C), the thermoelectromotive force of the loop becomes a single-valued function of the temperature at the measurement end. This kind of element that measures temperature by measuring thermoelectromotive force, that is, two pairs of metal conductors are called thermocouples.
